The American journalists detained in Iran for over a year…

Over a year ago now, a few American freelance journalists were taking a vacation from reporting in Iraq to hike in Kurdistan mountains, where they were arrested in a really sketchy manner by Iranian troops and have been held captive since. Over at AK Press’s blog, I read a really good article about the situation, pointing out that the whole myth of them as clueless hikers who never should have left America is bullshit. Instead, it suggests that they are independent journalists and now that journalists need to be independent in order to get decent stories in conflict areas, they are left to the wolves when it comes to situations like this (if the New York Times was behind these folks, the situation might be quite different.)
